The Mamuris Research Group is pleased to announce the launch of GeneBlock, a new research project funded by the Region of Thessaly. Led by Prof. Zissis Mamuris, the project aims to develop an innovative digital platform for the collection, management and utilization of genetic data from livestock populations across Thessaly.
The project is implemented through an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Laboratory of Genetics, Comparative and Evolutionary Biology (BIOZ) and the Networks and Telecommunications Laboratory (NITLab) of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Thessaly, led by Prof. Thanasis Korakis. This collaboration brings together expertise in genomics and livestock genetics with advanced capabilities in digital technologies, networking, IoT and data infrastructures.
GeneBlock integrates advanced genetic analyses, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Blockchain technology to create secure and traceable digital profiles of livestock populations. Genetic data will support breed identification and the investigation of traits related to disease resistance, environmental adaptation, productivity and reproductive performance, while GIS technologies will enable the spatial mapping of livestock populations and farms.
By connecting genomic information with geospatial data and secure Blockchain-based data management, the project aims to strengthen livestock traceability, genetic improvement and sustainable herd management. The platform will also facilitate the genetic identification of breeds and the traceability of animals and their derived products.
Developed in response to major challenges facing livestock production in Thessaly, including climate change and extreme environmental events, GeneBlock represents an interdisciplinary approach towards the digital transformation, resilience and sustainability of livestock farming in the region.
