Zissis Mamuris is Professor of Population Genetics at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Thessaly. He holds a B.Sc. in Biology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and pursued his postgraduate studies in France, obtaining a D.E.A. in Population Genetics and a Ph.D. in Cytogenetics and Population Genetics from Université Paris VII. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Institut Curie in Paris before continuing his academic career in Greece.
Throughout his career, Prof. Mamuris has combined research and teaching with significant academic leadership. He has held senior administrative positions at the University of Thessaly, including Vice Rector for Research (2014-2018) and Rector of the University of Thessaly (2018–2023).
Alongside these responsibilities, he has maintained extensive teaching and mentoring activities in genetics, population genetics, molecular ecology and evolutionary biology. He has supervised 35 undergraduate honors projects, 40 M.Sc. theses and 13 Ph.D. theses, contributing substantially to the training of young researchers and scientists.
His research encompasses population and evolutionary genetics, biodiversity, animal and human genomics, functional genomics and applied molecular genetics. His early work focused particularly on genetic diversity, population structure, phylogenetic relationships and microevolution, while his research has progressively expanded toward the application of modern genomics and bioinformatics to complex biological questions. Current research interests include the genomic characterization of indigenous livestock populations, genetic adaptation and resilience to environmental and climatic stressors, human and reproductive genetics, nutrigenomics and pharmacogenomics, as well as molecular approaches for food authentication and traceability.
Prof. Mamuris has participated in a large number of national and European competitive research programmes, serving in several of them as Principal Investigator and Scientific Coordinator. His research activities have brought together universities, research institutes, industry, healthcare organizations and livestock stakeholders, promoting interdisciplinary research and the translation of genomic knowledge into applications in human health, sustainable animal production, biodiversity conservation and the agri-food sector.
He has an extensive international scientific publication record, with his work receiving more than 4,450 citations and an h-index of 41 according to Google Scholar.
